[Boondoggle de France] -- Paris Sweet Hunt I

After the morning craziness, it was time for – a late brunch. We hurriedly headed out the tiny hotel room at Best Western (BW) – VB’s brother (VBB) had to get to the urgently needed coffee immediately, or he threatened to soon fade into oblivion. With a map carefully marked with all the sweet locations we were absolutely required to cover during our short stay, VB failed to persuade VBB to hold on just a little longer – he vanished into the very first pastry shop that met our eyes.

Au Pain Louise was a small pastry shop at the intersection of Boulevards Haussmann and Montmartre. VB rushed in to examine the few selections – perfectly understandable in the late late morning, while VBB rushed to the coffee bar. Then the big moment, the moment of ordering, came, and all conversation ceased. Failing in every attempt to communicate with the American English and the American sign language, VB signaled for VBB’s rescue. To VB’s utter amazement, VBB spoke français (??) and therefore completed the order correctly. This is fascinating! Suddenly a surge of relief and confidence overpowered VB: VBB (who took German in high school; taught himself Latin and Greek some time before; and is now learning Hebrew from a private tutor;) also speaks French! Definitely we should get by Paris, with ease! Whoo-hoo! (It wasn't very long before VB realized how unrealistic her optimism was – more stories later.)

After devouring a large piece of flan nature and another large piece of raspberry mousse cake, (and of course, the life-saving espresso, which VBB claimed to be the best espresso he’d ever had – poor American!), VBB sprang into life – well, sort of,

“Where are we going first? Quick! No time to waste! What's the hold-up?” VBB rushed out of the door while VB was still counting the euro coins.

(Wait a minute – shouldn't life in Paris be relaxed, breezy, gentle, carefree and unhurried? We should be rambling, roaming, drifting, crawling... not RACING!)
